Drops of Light: a social service programme implemented in Sri Lanka by Chathuri Jayasooriya- 2022-2023

During the economic crisis that impacted Sri Lanka between 2022 and 2023, we connected with a social service programme called Drops of Light to provide dry rations , school supplies and health care to individuals left particularly vulnerable to the economic situation.

Between December 2022 and January 2023, Humanity Unearthed used 100% of funds raised to Drops of Light to provide 50 families with dry rations packs ,worth Rs. 5,000 in the Medagama and Sewanagala districts in Monaragala.

In January 2023, given the escalating prices of educational/school materials such as books, bags and shoes, many schooling children especially from underprivileged backgrounds were finding it extremely difficult to access these materials. In response to this call, Humanity Unearthed used 100% of funds raised to provide stationary packs to Drops of Light to distribute to 150 school children in Monaragala (Bakinigahawela) and Matara (Athuraliya, Mulatiyana and Welipitiya) with stationary packs.

Finally, in January 2023, Humanity Unearthed was also able to provide continuous health care assistance for 10 families for a period of 6 months. Our heartfelt thanks to the team at Drops of Light for all your efforts on the ground to make all of this possible.

Velugu Special School, Andhra Pradesh, India: 2016

Velugu Special School is a non-governmental and not-for-profit organisation established in 1997 to provide food, clothing, healthcare, education, rehabilitation and residential accommodation for both children and aged women who are vulnerable and / or with a disability across the Chittoor District, Andhra Pradesh, India. Velugu responds to their essential needs, improving their living conditions, protecting them from violence and abuse and supporting them in their efforts to become self-reliant – ultimately promoting respect for their dignity and their fundamental rights.

Humanity Unearthed is delighted to share that we made the trek to India to put 100% of funds raised, at our charity trivia night in November 2015, to good use.

With your help, we were able to purchase 1 tonne of rice, 100kg of iodised salt, 3,200 sanitary pads, 200 bars of soap, and 80 incontinence products for the residents at Velugu Special School. Your kindness has ensured that the children and elderly women living in this orphanage will have the bare necessities that we all take for granted. Thank you all for your generosity. We look forward to working with you again!
